BUSINESS TECH: 2012 Most Popular Websites

Is there a website that you can't go a day without checking? Chances are, a few million other people have the same favorite, if web data company Alexa's list of the world's 500 most popular sites is any indication.

Alexa's web stats are updated daily, but its ranking system relies on three months worth of information. The rankings consist of several different criteria including a website's global reach and number of pageviews. "Alexa computes traffic rankings by analyzing the Web usage of millions of Alexa Toolbar users and data obtained from other, diverse traffic data sources," the company's site reads. READ MORE

Apocalypse never: Newly discovered Mayan calendar disproves 2012 doomsday myth

By Andrew Couts

The world is not going to end on December 21. No, not even according to the Mayan calendar. And especially not according to the awesome newly uncovered Mayan calendar -- the oldest known Mayan calendar in existence -- which was recently discovered by Boston University archeologist William Saturno.

Start Ups: How To Make Money On Youtube

In a nutshell you make money on YouTube by becoming a YouTube partner, which allows you to display ads on your videos, and then you earn a percentage of the revenues generated by clicks on those ads, much like with AdSense. As for how much money you can actually make, I heard numbers anywhere from $3 up to $10 per 1,000 video views.
However, the process of becoming a YouTube partner is not as trivial as becoming an AdSense publisher.

iPavement Embeds WiFi Hotspots In The Street

iPavement paving stones are installed in existing sidewalks, to provide WiFi access to passers-by

It seems that a lot of people have been talking about putting things in the road lately. Just within the past few years, we’ve heard about asphalt-embedded parking spot locators, power strips and coils, piezoelectric generators, and heat-harvesting water pipes. Now, a Spanish tech company has developed yet another piece of “street technology,” known as iPavement – sidewalk paving stones that double as WiFi hotspots.

How Small Investors are Making Huge Returns Trading Penny Stocks

You may have noticed a lot of buzz lately about Penny Stocks.

Penny stocks are the common stocks of smaller public companies that trade for less than a dollar per share.  Like other stocks, they are regulated by the SEC, but instead of trading on the major markets like the NYSE, they trade on “over-the-counter” markets, which are very accessible to the public.

Study: Antarctic Ice Melting From Warm Water Below

WASHINGTON (AP) — Antarctica's massive ice shelves are shrinking because they are being eaten away from below by warm water, a new study finds. That suggests that future sea levels could rise faster than many scientists have been predicting.
The western chunk of Antarctica is losing 23 feet of its floating ice sheet each year. Until now, scientists weren't exactly sure how it was happening and whether or how man-made global warming might be a factor. The answer, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature, is that climate change plays an indirect role — but one that has larger repercussions than if Antarctic ice were merely melting from warmer air.

Super Secret Hypersonic Aircraft Flew Out of Its Skin

ABC News: It turns out that tearing through the atmosphere at 20 times the speed of sound is bad for the skin, even if you're a super high-tech aircraft developed by the government's best engineers at its far-out research agency.
DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, has made public its  best guess about what might have caused its unmanned arrowhead-shaped Hypersonic Technology Vehicle (HTV-2) to suddenly lose contact and crash in the Pacific just a few minutes after slicing through the sky at Mach 20 last August: it was going so fast its skin peeled off.

Craigslist Ugly Design Due For Makeover

techcrunch
Recognizable, fast-loading, but outdated as hell website seeks Senior UI / Usability / Front End Engineer. Love it or hate it, Craigslist‘s design could provide a better experience, and apparently Craig thinks so too, as this weekend the site posted a job opening for someone to make it “faster, friendlier, and easier”. It’s hoping for a brave designer who can “develop new products and features that will have CL users swooning”, “optimize internal team tools”, and who has mobile app design and platform support skills.

There’s plenty of tweaks we’d appreciate like more consistent navigation controls and better use of whitespace. But don’t expect Craigslist to ditch its famously minimal facade that’s helped it climb to 50 million classified postings and 30 billion page views a month.

FBI: Hundreds Of Thousands May Lose Internet In July

WASHINGTON (AP) — For computer users, a few mouse clicks could mean the difference between staying online and losing Internet connections this summer.

Unknown to most of them, their problem began when international hackers ran an online advertising scam to take control of infected computers around the world. In a highly unusual response, the FBI set up a safety net months ago using government computers to prevent Internet disruptions for those infected users. But that system is to be shut down.

The FBI is encouraging users to visit a website run by its security partner, http://www.dcwg.org , that will inform them whether they're infected and explain how to fix the problem. After July 9, infected users won't be able to connect to the Internet.

This Speaker Dock Is Made Entirely Of Bamboo,No Electricity Required

I try my best to stay away from writing about speaker docks and phone cases. In my experience, they’re all the same, save for a few minor tweaks here and there. But today I stumbled upon a pretty novel little iPhone speaker dock that just so happens to be 100 percent green and uses no electricity whatsoever.
You’re intrigued. I can feel it.

Meet the iBamboo iPhone speaker dock. It’s made from a single piece of bamboo, and holds the iPhone in place as it plays music to amplify the sound. Granted, you won’t get any extra power in the lows or feel that bass keep bumpin’ bumpin’ (this beat goes boom, boom), but you will get some added volume and that’s all the casual listener needs anyways.
Plus, the iBamboo is pretty damn beautiful, in both bamboo and black color flavors. It exists in perfect harmony with the minimalist design of Apple products, and is eco-friendly to boot.

StartUps: Let Launchgram Bring New Product Info To You

Last week at the 10x Xelerator, Andy Sparks impelled LaunchGram.com into motion and lazy people all over the world rejoiced (or they will…eventually). This new service, in the words of Sparks, “aggregates pre-release demand signals for products coming soon.”

The way it works is that consumers can create an account at LaunchGram’s website and subscribe to news about imminently launching products of interest
(the iPhone 5 for example).

Once users subscribe, they can receive “LaunchGrams” via email with curated updates about product release date, pre-order availability, photos and video. (LaunchGram does the dirty work here by scouring the web for the most up to date information about listed products). The same information that shows up in emails can also be viewed on product-specific pages at the main website.

SICK!! Hands on with Microsoft Research's Beamatron

Microsoft Research is continuing its trend of showing off some pretty cool demos, this time with the "Beamaton" augmented reality system. Unlike some other AR experiences, Beamatron strips away the layer of abstraction that comes from looking at the augmented world through a portal, such as the screen of a smartphone or PS Vita. Instead, the system uses a projector and a Kinect sensor on a motorized pan-tilt head to project virtual objects into the real world. Beamatron is able to create a depth map of the physical space around it using the Kinect Fusion software, allowing it to alter the projections to preserve their form on various physical shapes. What's more, the projections can react to the physical dimension of the space, such as colliding with obstacles or falling off elevated surfaces.
In the demo below, a virtual remote controlled car reacts to driving over ramps or people's feet as you'd expect a real car to, and is even stopped by physical walls. In terms of practical use, Microsoft mentioned that they could see the system used to project notifications onto surfaces of a room, making sure that they are always in an individual's line of sight. While we're not too keen on being unable to escape notifications, we'd gladly take that car for a spin.

How to Make Your Company More Like Apple

Author: Daniel Burrus
Published: April 18, 2012 at 12:08 pm

The most recent CNBC All-America Economic Survey revealed that at least half of all U.S. households own at least one Apple product. In other words, there are more than 55 million American homes with at least one iPhone, iPad, iPod, or Mac computer.
The actual breakdown is interesting: Just as many Americans between ages 18 and 34 count themselves among Apple users as those ages 35 to 49 (63 percent). The number drops to 50 percent when you get into the 50 to 64 age group, and down to just 26 percent among those 65 and older.

Friend Request: Parenting On Facebook

When their children are babies, parents use Facebook to share pictures of birthday parties, school projects and family events. On the other hand, what if your children are teenagers, old enough to post their own pictures and events? If you're like the majority of parents in the US, you would probably admit to secretly accessing your teen's profile to see what he or she is up to online.

According to a survey "Digital Coming of Age" by AVG, an online security firm, 6 out of 10 of the parents of 14-17 year olds admit that they secretly check their teen's accounts to see what they are doing online. Worldwide, that number is around fifty percent. The survey consulted over 4000 parents in 11 countries. In the US, a larger percentage, 72 percent, of parents maintain a presence in their teen's online life by friending them on Facebook. Both actions can be deliberate steps parents take to protect their children from online bullying, try to set continuous boundaries and acknowledge the role that social networks and online activity play in children's lives. Openly friending your child on Facebook is also a good way to keep a pulse on his/her life.

"How Dirty is the Cloud?": A Grimy Look Into Apple

First Look Inside New "The Amazing Spider Man" Game

First Look Inside New "The Amazing Spider Man"

New App Allows You to Explore Alien Planets

Many wonder about what goes on beyond the stars and the planets orbiting around us, and thanks to Kepler Explorer ,free for iPad and iPhone, you can now look through over 2,300 alien planet candidates, which were discovered by NASA’s Kepler Mission. So far, around 2,300 alien planet candidates in about 1,800 distant planetary systems have been discovered.

The app first leads you through a drop-down menu, which lists all the discovered planetary systems that you can then move a slider to show planets’ orbits around their respective stars. Your also able to play with different possible compositions of the planet's body and atmosphere, using elements such as iron, rock, water and hydrogen to try out combinations consistent with the Kepler Mission’s findings.

Most of the planets are inhabitable to life, but some of the planets are Earth-sized temperate objects, meaning you could be scoping out an alien's home.

How to Build a Media Empire From Your Bedroom With Just a Laptop

The media landscape is changing right in front of our eyes – we have moved from a world where large organizations controlled the media we consumed to a more democratic time where everybody has a voice. Because of the huge shifts in technology, anybody can start their own media empire with a small amount of money, lots of drive and a creative mind.
Two of the biggest examples are Techcrunch and Mashable which were both started by individuals in their own homes and in less than five years have each become worth close to $50 million. So how would you go about creating your own little media empire and what are the barriers to entry?

Google to split stock to keep power with founders

NEW YORK (AP) — Google improved its short-term finances even as it seeks to preserve its long-term interests.
The online search leader reported a 61 percent increase in its net income for the first three months of the year and announced plans to issue a new class of stock to shareholders. The new shares won't have any voting power and will help Google's senior leaders keep control years from now.
Under the plan, expected to win approval in June, all current stockholders would get one share of the new Class C stock for each share they now own. This effectively splits Google's stock price in half.
Employees given Google stock in the future would get the non-voting stock, allowing voting power to remain with existing shareholders. The same would hold true for companies that Google buys using its stock.
Stock splits reduce prices for each share, allowing smaller investors to participate. Although Google said investors had been clamoring for one, the decision announced Thursday seemed driven more by a desire to retain control.
Without change, senior leaders would eventually lose their voting power. CEO Larry Page and fellow co-founder Sergey Brin said that would undermine "our aspirations for Google over the very long term."
Since it went public in 2004, Google's founders have emphasized a need to insulate management from short-term pressures. That's a view now commonly held by the newest generation of freshly public — or soon-to-be public — tech companies such as Zynga Inc. and Facebook Inc.

A Billion Dollar Turning Point For Mobile Apps

The path for Internet start-ups used to be quite clear: establish a presence on the Web first, then come up with a version of your service for mobile devices.
Now, at a time when the mobile start-up Instagram can command $1 billion in a sale to Facebook, some start-ups are asking: Who needs the Web?

Smartphones are everywhere now, allowing apps like Foursquare and Path to be self-contained social worlds, existing almost entirely on mobile devices. It is a major change from just a few years ago, underscoring how the momentum in the tech world is shifting to mobile from computers.

In that context, the Instagram deal looks like something of a turning point, as even the Web giant Facebook tries to get a better grasp on a market that requires a rethinking of old rules.

An Uncertain Fate for Urban Projects in California

LOS ANGELES — It is impossible to miss the long-moribund Santa Barbara Plaza, a collection of mostly boarded-up retail buildings in South Los Angeles across the street from a shopping center that just underwent a $30 million overhaul. After some costly missteps that only worsened the blight, plans to transform the ugly 19.2-acre site into a mixed-use development called Marlton Square finally seemed to be gathering steam, and the city redevelopment agency started clearing the land last summer.

But now Marlton Square, like many urban development projects in California, is in limbo. The state’s 397 community redevelopment agencies, including the one that was shepherding Marlton Square, went out of business on Feb. 1, victims of the state’s fiscal crisis. Legislation enacted last June to eliminate the agencies was upheld in December by the California Supreme Court.

Prosecuter in Trayvon Martin Case to Make Announcement

SANFORD, Fla. — The Florida special prosecutor investigating the shooting death of Trayvon Martin has scheduled a news conference for Wednesday evening, officials said on Wednesday.
It was not yet clear whether the prosecutor, Angela B. Corey, had decided to charge George Zimmerman, 28, a crime watch volunteer, who fatally shot Mr. Martin, an unarmed teenager, in a case that has captivated the country and brought to the fore issues of race, violence and precisely what constitutes self-defense.

FOR THE ELITE: World's Most Expensive Watch: Louis Moinet Watch Set $4.6Mil

Louis Moinet Watch Set: $4.6 Mil
You are looking at the one-of-a-kind Meteoris from watch maker Louis Moinet. Meteoris is a set of four watches and this artfully made mechanical planetarium. The set is for the serious astrological and horological connoisseur. Clearly very expensive, the set has some interesting features that are worth knowing about. Looking at the planetarium it is clear that the table like structure is on a pedestal with an ornate mechanical planetarium on it surrounded by four pillow sections for the watches. Actually, Given the complexity of the planetarium, I wish that Louis Moinet would have put more effort into giving the watches more appropriate housings. You have four piece unique watches that are each beautifully made tourbillons that are just sitting there on a pillow. At least give them a dust cover.

GAMES and GADGETS: Why Your Next Hardware Purchase Needs To Be A Tablet

Forbes
With 11.2 million Apple iPad’s sold in Q4 2011 alone and with iPad3 looming, it’s time to make the firm argument that business owners (particularly those that run a small, tight ship) need to integrate the device into their business in a way that’s more than just “I synced my work e-mail to my personal iPad.”

BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY: Facebook Timeline For Brands: It's About Storytelling

FORBES:

As anticipated, Facebook Timeline for Pages was announced Wednesday. The buzz is deafening. Us social media types don’t lack opinions or channels to share them. Among my network, the chatter is mostly positive, obsessed with aesthetics of the interface, new navigation patterns and the placement of things like Apps, Photos and the like. But this, my “friends,” is not the real story here.

WHERE THEY DO THAT AT?: RICH FAMILY KEEPS IMMIGRANT SERVANT IN CLOSET FOR 6 YEARS

courtesy of Smoking Gun
A wealthy New York woman is facing criminal charges after being accused of keeping an illegal immigrant as an indentured servant and forcing her to live in a closet for nearly six years.
Documents posted on the Smoking Gun allege that Annie George, 39, and her now-deceased husband, Mathai Kolath George, hired an illegal immigrant from the Indian state of Kerala. The immigrant, identified only as "V.M.," was promised about $1,000 a month in wages to live in the family's 34-room, 30,000-square-foot home, known as Llenroc mansion, which houses a helicopter pad, 15 fireplaces, marble flooring, 24-karat gold gilded ceilings and a glass elevator. V.M. was tasked with taking care of the Georges' four young children, along with performing household duties in the mansion located about 20 miles north of Albany.

TOP 8 SECRET SOCIETIES IN THE WORLD! Lakeside Post/Dramacydal Ent **EXCLUSIVE**

George Bush "Skull & Bones"

No matter what their supposed purpose, there’s something inherently sinister about a secret society. Though most are formed with relatively realistic political and religious goals in mind, their focus on mystery and secrecy has made them the target of countless criticisms and conspiracy theories involving everything from aliens and the occult to world domination. Of course, the reality is usually much more innocuous, but that doesn’t mean that the groups don’t have some fascinatingly weird practices, or that they haven’t had an impact on world events.
